HOW DO I BECOME A DIRECTOR? AND WHAT ARE THE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Understand Eligibility Criteria: Familiarize yourself with the eligibility criteria for directors set out by the BC Societies Act. Generally, you must be at least 18 years old, not declared incapable, and not be an undischarged bankrupt.

  • Nomination and Election: If there's a vacancy and the non-profit society agrees to consider your nomination, they may invite you to stand for election during their Annual General Meeting (AGM) or a special meeting. Members of the society typically vote to elect new directors.

  • Obtain Consents and Disclosures: Before becoming a director, you will need to provide personal information, such as your full name, address, and contact details, to be included in the society's records. You may also be required to disclose any potential conflicts of interest.

  • Understand Legal Obligations: Familiarize yourself with the legal obligations and responsibilities of directors under the BC Societies Act. This includes acting honestly and in good faith, exercising reasonable care, and avoiding conflicts of interest.

  • Orient Yourself: Once elected, participate in an orientation session or receive relevant materials from the non-profit society. This will help you understand their governance structure, policies, ongoing initiatives, and expectations for directors.

  • Engage and Contribute: Actively engage in board meetings, committees, and other relevant activities. Contribute your skills, expertise, and perspectives to advance the non-profit society's mission and goals.

I'M NEW TO THE 2SLGBTQIA+ COMMUNITY & I DON'T KNOW WHERE TO START

Start with us! Send us a message, become a member, join our mailing list –– if you have specific questions or require specific assistance at one of our events we would be happy to do everything possible to make sure you can take part.

CAN I ATTEND PRIDE EVENTS IF I'M NOT PART OF THE 2SLGBTQIA+ COMMUNITY

Absolutely! Pride events are open to everyone. Allies and supporters are encouraged to attend and show their support for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. It's a great opportunity to learn, celebrate diversity, and stand up against discrimination. But we are not just Pride events, we are also protests, days of remembrance, struggles. And as an ally, we expect that you are also there supporting us in those times of need just as much as you are there during times of joy and celebration.

The Minimum age to volunteer is 18 years old.

HOW ACCESSIBLE ARE YOUR EVENTS?

We do everything within our power to break down barriers in order to make our events safe, accessible, and open to all. Please contact us if you need a support in place for anyone of our events or for any event in the South Okanagan.

HOW CAN I SUPPORT SOS PRIDE IF I CAN'T ACTIVELY PARTICIPATE?

If you're unable to actively participate, you can still support the Pride Society by spreading awareness, donating, or by joining our newsletter and becoming a member. You can also engage in conversations, challenge discrimination, and be an ally/representative for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community in your daily life.
